Prêles 1: 14.07.2013 - First day in the camp

The campers started their morning activities at 9:30 with the Sports Olympics whereby several teams were made, namely: Boston Red socks, Club Futbol de Monterry, AC Milan, Stade Toulousain, Alba Berlin, Guangzhou Evergrade FC, Barcelona FC, Chicago Blackhawks, Pfadi Winterthur and Vakifbank Istanbul, each team having 6 members. They all set out to the sports field ready for a day of healthy competition. The activities were in no particular order, but each team had to participate. There was “name-matching” where the team members were given slips of paper with first names and last names of all the campers and had to try to match up all the names correctly. Next was Frisbee golf. In this game, the team members were stationed at different points and had to pass the Frisbee around the circle as many times as possible in five minutes. It was very tricky on such a windy day. Bucket filling must have been the hardest for the teams. In this game, there was a bucket of water on one side of the field and a measuring cup on the other side of the field. The team had to figure out how they were going to transport water from one end to another in under 5 minutes. The goal was to collect as much water as they could in the measuring cup. Different teams used different methods, but the most common was using your mouth. This proved to be a funny experience. The handicap relay determined our teamwork skills, members were strapped back to back, blindfolded and had theirs shoelaces tied. This resulted in a lot of hopping and even more falling. One of the easiest games was aiming for tin cans and attempting to make them topple over. Teams scored high marks in this game which was essential for later on. Most of the games were sporty but the camp instructors did organize a bit of math where team members had to guess the measurements of certain objects. Pictionary was another game which tested team building skills. This game was quite similar to charades and was very amusing to watch as the team members tried to decipher absurd drawings made from chalk. The balloon popping race was quite fun. The team members had to race to the other side of the field while blowing up a balloon, then pop it and run back. For some, this was very hard. The human knot tested our teamwork abilities. We had to hold hands and tangle into a knot, then undo it without letting go. The campers also played ping pong but without a table. We had to keep the ball from touching the ground for as long as possible. The highest score was 34 hits, proving it was quite hard. The day was very tiring and the campers worked up an appetite for lunch.

Later, in the afternoon, the teams played several athletic games. There were two baseball variations—one with five bases, and one with a Frisbee. The other games included an egg drop and a game called “Team Header Ball.” In the egg drop competition, each team came up with a creative way to protect their egg so that it could survive a fall from the top floor of the camp’s house. In Team Header Ball, two teams competed against each other. One teammate would pass the ball to their closest team member and they would head the ball back to the person who passed it to them, and this would count as one point. Each game lasted for 10 minutes, followed by a five minute break. After a long day of sports and games, everyone returned to the house for showers and a break.

After a delicious spaghetti dinner, the campers had free time until the evening excursion. They met outside the camp house at 20:30 and commenced their walk. The small trek took the campers through the farms and countryside and even partially through the woods. Fields, trees, mountains, and a setting sun set the scene for the walk. The campers arrived back at the camp house for dessert of pudding and fruit salad and the results of the day’s “Sport Olympics.” The top teams, The Chicago Blackhawks and Vakifbank Istanbul tying for first place and Barcelona FC following close behind in second, chose their prizes and the evening concluded. The exhausted Olympians retired to bed to fuel up for another fun-packed day.
