Prêles 1: 17.07.2013 - Fifth day in the camp

Thursday was another hiking day. The campers chose which activity they wanted to do after hiking: watersports, ballsports, or relaxing. At the lake, the watersports group enjoyed the beautiful weather, but later in the afternoon, the wind started to pick up. The relaxing group had free time in Biel.

A barbecue had been planned for dinner, but the pouring rain moved the meal indoors. The weather cleared up late in the evening, allowing a bonfire and chocolate bananas.

Prêles 1: 17.07.2013 - Fourth day in the camp

Wednesday was a fun day of main activities. In the morning, the weather was iffy, with a cloudy sky threatening with rain, but it quickly cleared up by noon. Ballsport II spent the day relaxing and swimming by Bieler see. The other ballsport groups played volleyball, football, baseball, tennis, and had water games, such as waterfights and a slip’n’slide.  Mountain sport II went to a forest park, and had fun on ropes courses, bungee swings, and freefalls. The biking group biked over hills, and through a forest despite the hot weather. They then settled down to eat on top of a hill. The evening program was free time with options of card games, Twister, ping pong, table soccer and football.

Prêles 1: 16.07.2013 - Third day in the camp

On Tuesday the campers had loads of activities to do and a wide range of chances to have fun; going to the cave, trekking to Mt.Vully, walking to the island St.Petersinsel and biking!

At the cave, the campers had a lot of fun visiting the cave going over rough ground and also through a forest. The trip to the cave was about 2hrs long in extreme heat, never the less they had fun. At Mt.Vully the campers went on an extensive hike after taking a funiculaire, train and boat to the location. It was extreme fun trekking through grapevines and fields but eventually, reaching the top of the mountain to see a beautiful view that was worth the struggle.

The trip to St.Petersinsel was a walk to an island where they were divided into 3 groups and had to walk for about 1-2 hours but also took the boat and funiculaire. This proved to be a really fun experience as they also went swimming. The biking might have been the hardest as they biked for 8 hours including breaks. It was very enjoyable for all of them and they managed to cover 15km! In the evening campers had the choice of watching Slumdog Millionaire or for the over 16 year olds, to spend their evening at a local pub. At 11pm everyone had to be in bed.

Prêles 1: 15.07.2013 - Second day in the camp

Monday morning the campers packed their lunches for a day with their main activity groups. After a jumpstyle warm up, they split up into groups: ball sport I, II and III, mountain sport I and II, biking, and communications. The ball sport groups spent the morning on the sports field playing beach volleyball and football. After lunch, ball sport groups II and III stayed on the field for an afternoon of rugby, baseball, and water balloon fights. Ball sport I went down to the lake, Bieler see, to swim, play volleyball, and relax. It was the perfect activity for a hot July afternoon. Communications spent the morning in the camp house, writing a report on the previous day, then joined ball sport I at the lake. The mountain sport groups started their morning with an hour and a half long hike to their climbing spot, la Neuveville. They climbed for two to three hours. In between they stopped to roast sausages over a camp fire for lunch. When they finished climbing they went down to the lake to swim and cool off. The biking group went to le Landeron. Despite the intense heat, everyone had great fun biking all together.

Later, for the evening program, the campers split up into fun activities. There were 4 activities to choose from. The first choice, Werewolf, is a roleplaying card game. Mirroring the morning warm up, the second option was jumpstyle. The third choice was an evening of table soccer and table tennis. The final option was a crafty pencil case, made from an empty beer can. And with that, the day ended.

Prêles 1: 14.07.2013 - First day in the camp

The campers started their morning activities at 9:30 with the Sports Olympics whereby several teams were made, namely: Boston Red socks, Club Futbol de Monterry, AC Milan, Stade Toulousain, Alba Berlin, Guangzhou Evergrade FC, Barcelona FC, Chicago Blackhawks, Pfadi Winterthur and Vakifbank Istanbul, each team having 6 members. They all set out to the sports field ready for a day of healthy competition. The activities were in no particular order, but each team had to participate. There was “name-matching” where the team members were given slips of paper with first names and last names of all the campers and had to try to match up all the names correctly. Next was Frisbee golf. In this game, the team members were stationed at different points and had to pass the Frisbee around the circle as many times as possible in five minutes. It was very tricky on such a windy day. Bucket filling must have been the hardest for the teams. In this game, there was a bucket of water on one side of the field and a measuring cup on the other side of the field. The team had to figure out how they were going to transport water from one end to another in under 5 minutes. The goal was to collect as much water as they could in the measuring cup. Different teams used different methods, but the most common was using your mouth. This proved to be a funny experience. The handicap relay determined our teamwork skills, members were strapped back to back, blindfolded and had theirs shoelaces tied. This resulted in a lot of hopping and even more falling. One of the easiest games was aiming for tin cans and attempting to make them topple over. Teams scored high marks in this game which was essential for later on. Most of the games were sporty but the camp instructors did organize a bit of math where team members had to guess the measurements of certain objects. Pictionary was another game which tested team building skills. This game was quite similar to charades and was very amusing to watch as the team members tried to decipher absurd drawings made from chalk. The balloon popping race was quite fun. The team members had to race to the other side of the field while blowing up a balloon, then pop it and run back. For some, this was very hard. The human knot tested our teamwork abilities. We had to hold hands and tangle into a knot, then undo it without letting go. The campers also played ping pong but without a table. We had to keep the ball from touching the ground for as long as possible. The highest score was 34 hits, proving it was quite hard. The day was very tiring and the campers worked up an appetite for lunch.

Later, in the afternoon, the teams played several athletic games. There were two baseball variations—one with five bases, and one with a Frisbee. The other games included an egg drop and a game called “Team Header Ball.” In the egg drop competition, each team came up with a creative way to protect their egg so that it could survive a fall from the top floor of the camp’s house. In Team Header Ball, two teams competed against each other. One teammate would pass the ball to their closest team member and they would head the ball back to the person who passed it to them, and this would count as one point. Each game lasted for 10 minutes, followed by a five minute break. After a long day of sports and games, everyone returned to the house for showers and a break.

After a delicious spaghetti dinner, the campers had free time until the evening excursion. They met outside the camp house at 20:30 and commenced their walk. The small trek took the campers through the farms and countryside and even partially through the woods. Fields, trees, mountains, and a setting sun set the scene for the walk. The campers arrived back at the camp house for dessert of pudding and fruit salad and the results of the day’s “Sport Olympics.” The top teams, The Chicago Blackhawks and Vakifbank Istanbul tying for first place and Barcelona FC following close behind in second, chose their prizes and the evening concluded. The exhausted Olympians retired to bed to fuel up for another fun-packed day.
