Saturday, august 17th

We had breakfast at half past eight. We were all nervous and staring at each other’s outfits for the congress. We were all looking forward to the questions with Evelyn Widmer Schlumpf. At 10 o’clock we went to the congress fast (I really think Claudio was more nervous than us and he wanted to be perfect on timeJ) and everything started going well. We had some breakfast, we visited  some “shops” in the congress and at 11 we went to the workshops. Some of us went to the”Wirtschaft” workshops and some others to “migration”. I really think it was a very good idea.
At first, the man in our group spoke about the economy in switzerland vs. globalization and then people from the public made questions. They were some good questions or requests, for example asking for more councilors and there were other requests not so good. For example there was a guy who protested because the meeting was held in german and not in french, although the introduction had already been in french. But Nadia said that it often happened so we did not really think very much of it.

After the workshop we had lunch, which was really good and we had a really good time. After the lunch we organized everything to the meeting with Evelyn Schlumpf. Where should be sit, if we should wake up from the eats when she came, if we should say frau bundesratin or only “Frau”. We heard the speech that Evely gebt but after we left the room.
And at least, shecame to speak with us. Each one of us made one or two questions to her, depending on what we wanted to know, personal, of Switzerland or of the global world. It was really fine, because she took her time answering all the questions, even fo she had to do it in English, in german or in French.
Then we took some photos, Julie and Nadeige went on an interview and even we were on the tv. At 4, more or less, we went home. We got changed, we chill a little, and then we went to the schatzalp hotel, were all the personality that were on the congress would be one more time. In the hotel, wespoke, we had fun, we met new people and we listened to really good music from a boy who played really well the piano from Switzerland. At half past eight, more or less, we had dinner. It was a really fine dinner, with candels and all kind of expensiveness but from my point of view, the rations that we eat, they were really small, even do they were really good and art like.
After the dinner,we were so tired that we went straight home. I think we were so sad that It was almost the last night… but we enjoyed like every other time. Living and breathing, having friends and enyoying.
Thanks to the OSA, for all the good experiences we have had in this week. Thank you and one million times thank you

Nele

Afternoon
After an interesting morning at the Monstein Beer brewery we headed to EMS-Chemie where we were greeted by Bruno Fischer, a retired former employee who was responsible for the construction and management of several EMS-Chemie factories world-wide.
Bruno Fischer firstly showed the main parts of the plant, where a storage facility holds over 30,000 different components responsible not only for the customers of the company but also for the main function of the factory itself-which specialize in producing plastics for many organizations worldwide including car manufacturers such as Audi, Mercedes and BMW.

We were taken on a tour of the museum in which we were shown the history of the company, from its initial idea from Werner Oswald who proposed to the government that he could use ethanol by burning trees and reducing fuel consumption by 30%. When he first came up with the idea, he was rebuffed by the government due to the price and location of a plant. However, the birth of World War 2 brought about new problems for the Swiss with the Italians under the control of Mussolini and the Germans under Hitler, refusing to give the Swiss fuel. Therefore almost immediately the government approached Oswald about building the plant, thus the birth of the EMS-Chemie.

We were taken through the history of the products the organisation made, such as the revolution in the Nylon fibre when injecting a specific polymer heated to around 300⁰C. We went throughout the company’s history with Mr Fischer revealing the times when the company was faced with bankruptcy and competition from other companies. This is when e discovered that Christoph Blocher, the former federal councilor candidate bought the company and got it functioning again on a global level.
Currently, it is producing many new products including components for cars in which reduce the weight and subsequent fuel consumption.
The group thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon at EMS-Chemie and sends its thanks to Bruno Fischer.

Wednesday, 15.08.13

Today we found out lots of different cultural things. Even at breakfast we found at that people in other countries had preferences including the divisive issue of whether butter is applied before jam or not. So we already had a little culture shock at eight in the morning. This showed that even breakfast can become globalised with Spanish people adopting the French and British way of having it.

We then found out how tourism can be globalised by paying a visit to the Davos tourist office. We met Achim Schneider whose job is the dream of every modern teenager, controlling their Facebook and Twitter page. But it’s not as easy as it seems. Posting the wrong on the account can lead to very bad consequences. He told us that writing Davos’s views was much harder than writing his own views.

A job like his is a modern invention. Even in 2005, he wouldn’t have been able to do this. With technology being a global thing, Dario Collongia, a famous skier, can tweet all of his followers encouraging them to come to Davos. This is an official contract with Davos tourism, and currently the only one. We were told that they had to be very careful when choosing people in the case of them destroying their image.

In the afternoon, we met three interesting people. Emmanuel, Pascal and Nina who are all involved in youth politics, specifically the youth parliament and Young European Swiss. At first, Emmanuel presented what he did. He was active in youth politics and helping teenagers find out more about politics and the e-vote.

Pascal went next and told us about growing up in Chur where there wasn’t much for young people and how he wanted his own youth parliament. Nina is part of YES (Young European Swiss) which wants to join the European Union and organises things so people know more about the EU.

After they all introduced themselves, we went into little groups and discussed what they mentioned in their introductions. This produced interesting discussions about things which affect young people. With different cultures we had different perspectives.

Mittwoch, 15.08.13

Prêles 1: 17.07.2013 - Fifth day in the camp

Thursday was another hiking day. The campers chose which activity they wanted to do after hiking: watersports, ballsports, or relaxing. At the lake, the watersports group enjoyed the beautiful weather, but later in the afternoon, the wind started to pick up. The relaxing group had free time in Biel.

A barbecue had been planned for dinner, but the pouring rain moved the meal indoors. The weather cleared up late in the evening, allowing a bonfire and chocolate bananas.

Prêles 1: 17.07.2013 - Fourth day in the camp

Wednesday was a fun day of main activities. In the morning, the weather was iffy, with a cloudy sky threatening with rain, but it quickly cleared up by noon. Ballsport II spent the day relaxing and swimming by Bieler see. The other ballsport groups played volleyball, football, baseball, tennis, and had water games, such as waterfights and a slip’n’slide.  Mountain sport II went to a forest park, and had fun on ropes courses, bungee swings, and freefalls. The biking group biked over hills, and through a forest despite the hot weather. They then settled down to eat on top of a hill. The evening program was free time with options of card games, Twister, ping pong, table soccer and football.

Prêles 1: 16.07.2013 - Third day in the camp

On Tuesday the campers had loads of activities to do and a wide range of chances to have fun; going to the cave, trekking to Mt.Vully, walking to the island St.Petersinsel and biking!

At the cave, the campers had a lot of fun visiting the cave going over rough ground and also through a forest. The trip to the cave was about 2hrs long in extreme heat, never the less they had fun. At Mt.Vully the campers went on an extensive hike after taking a funiculaire, train and boat to the location. It was extreme fun trekking through grapevines and fields but eventually, reaching the top of the mountain to see a beautiful view that was worth the struggle.

The trip to St.Petersinsel was a walk to an island where they were divided into 3 groups and had to walk for about 1-2 hours but also took the boat and funiculaire. This proved to be a really fun experience as they also went swimming. The biking might have been the hardest as they biked for 8 hours including breaks. It was very enjoyable for all of them and they managed to cover 15km! In the evening campers had the choice of watching Slumdog Millionaire or for the over 16 year olds, to spend their evening at a local pub. At 11pm everyone had to be in bed.

Prêles 1: 15.07.2013 - Second day in the camp

Monday morning the campers packed their lunches for a day with their main activity groups. After a jumpstyle warm up, they split up into groups: ball sport I, II and III, mountain sport I and II, biking, and communications. The ball sport groups spent the morning on the sports field playing beach volleyball and football. After lunch, ball sport groups II and III stayed on the field for an afternoon of rugby, baseball, and water balloon fights. Ball sport I went down to the lake, Bieler see, to swim, play volleyball, and relax. It was the perfect activity for a hot July afternoon. Communications spent the morning in the camp house, writing a report on the previous day, then joined ball sport I at the lake. The mountain sport groups started their morning with an hour and a half long hike to their climbing spot, la Neuveville. They climbed for two to three hours. In between they stopped to roast sausages over a camp fire for lunch. When they finished climbing they went down to the lake to swim and cool off. The biking group went to le Landeron. Despite the intense heat, everyone had great fun biking all together.

Later, for the evening program, the campers split up into fun activities. There were 4 activities to choose from. The first choice, Werewolf, is a roleplaying card game. Mirroring the morning warm up, the second option was jumpstyle. The third choice was an evening of table soccer and table tennis. The final option was a crafty pencil case, made from an empty beer can. And with that, the day ended.

Prêles 1: 14.07.2013 - First day in the camp

The campers started their morning activities at 9:30 with the Sports Olympics whereby several teams were made, namely: Boston Red socks, Club Futbol de Monterry, AC Milan, Stade Toulousain, Alba Berlin, Guangzhou Evergrade FC, Barcelona FC, Chicago Blackhawks, Pfadi Winterthur and Vakifbank Istanbul, each team having 6 members. They all set out to the sports field ready for a day of healthy competition. The activities were in no particular order, but each team had to participate. There was “name-matching” where the team members were given slips of paper with first names and last names of all the campers and had to try to match up all the names correctly. Next was Frisbee golf. In this game, the team members were stationed at different points and had to pass the Frisbee around the circle as many times as possible in five minutes. It was very tricky on such a windy day. Bucket filling must have been the hardest for the teams. In this game, there was a bucket of water on one side of the field and a measuring cup on the other side of the field. The team had to figure out how they were going to transport water from one end to another in under 5 minutes. The goal was to collect as much water as they could in the measuring cup. Different teams used different methods, but the most common was using your mouth. This proved to be a funny experience. The handicap relay determined our teamwork skills, members were strapped back to back, blindfolded and had theirs shoelaces tied. This resulted in a lot of hopping and even more falling. One of the easiest games was aiming for tin cans and attempting to make them topple over. Teams scored high marks in this game which was essential for later on. Most of the games were sporty but the camp instructors did organize a bit of math where team members had to guess the measurements of certain objects. Pictionary was another game which tested team building skills. This game was quite similar to charades and was very amusing to watch as the team members tried to decipher absurd drawings made from chalk. The balloon popping race was quite fun. The team members had to race to the other side of the field while blowing up a balloon, then pop it and run back. For some, this was very hard. The human knot tested our teamwork abilities. We had to hold hands and tangle into a knot, then undo it without letting go. The campers also played ping pong but without a table. We had to keep the ball from touching the ground for as long as possible. The highest score was 34 hits, proving it was quite hard. The day was very tiring and the campers worked up an appetite for lunch.

Later, in the afternoon, the teams played several athletic games. There were two baseball variations—one with five bases, and one with a Frisbee. The other games included an egg drop and a game called “Team Header Ball.” In the egg drop competition, each team came up with a creative way to protect their egg so that it could survive a fall from the top floor of the camp’s house. In Team Header Ball, two teams competed against each other. One teammate would pass the ball to their closest team member and they would head the ball back to the person who passed it to them, and this would count as one point. Each game lasted for 10 minutes, followed by a five minute break. After a long day of sports and games, everyone returned to the house for showers and a break.

After a delicious spaghetti dinner, the campers had free time until the evening excursion. They met outside the camp house at 20:30 and commenced their walk. The small trek took the campers through the farms and countryside and even partially through the woods. Fields, trees, mountains, and a setting sun set the scene for the walk. The campers arrived back at the camp house for dessert of pudding and fruit salad and the results of the day’s “Sport Olympics.” The top teams, The Chicago Blackhawks and Vakifbank Istanbul tying for first place and Barcelona FC following close behind in second, chose their prizes and the evening concluded. The exhausted Olympians retired to bed to fuel up for another fun-packed day.
